A remarkable twentieth century woman who was creative, imaginative, and self-directed in every way.
Anne Geyer was born in Philadelphia just before the turn of the century to George and Mary Geyer. Her great grand father was John Geyer Mayor of Philadelphia.
Anne was always a bright outstanding child who loved colors, nature and above all books. She attended West Philadelphia School for Girls and the Philadelphia School of Design for Woman (later to be the Moore Institute for Art).
As a vocalist Anne sang contralto for various church choirs and with the Philadelphia Civic Opera under the direction of Alexander Smallens. She was a personal friend and performer with Nelson Eddy.
Anne Geyer was admired and loved by all who knew her. She was a gifted and engaging conversationalist who displayed a genuine interest in her interaction with others. Her friends and admirers where many.
I, Thomas Wellar, had the privilege to spend my childhood and youth with her. My family lived next door to her and as a child I was caught up with her amazing character.
The Geyer’s moved to Yeadon in 1914. Yeadon is a suburb of Philadelphia but in 1914 it was country. The Wellar’s were their closest neighbors. Yeadon is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania railroad has a train station in Yeadon so in fifteen minutes you can be in Center City Philadelphia.
The railroad made it possible for Anne to work in the city and live in Yeadon. Anne never married and was committed to caring for her mother and father. The Wellar’s became her family and Anne was my mentor.
Anne had a thirty- seven year relationship with the Artist John Barber who was a painter of international interest. John and Anne would paint with oils together in Anne’s studio for hours almost everyday during my youth. In many instances there is similarity in coloration in their work.
John would spend long periods of time in Europe each year and very often his mother would stay in Yeadon.
